Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation may put you at a higher risk of developing certain eye conditions. With summer nearing, you must be prepared to deal with stronger UV rays. One of the best ways to protect your eyes is to use high-quality sunglasses, especially if you have to be outdoors for an extended period of time.
AAPECS Atlantic Eye Care, your trusted provider of LASIK co-management and other high-quality eye care services, shares tips on finding a good pair of sunglasses, as May marks UV Awareness Month.
Check the UV Label
Exposing your eyes to high levels of UV radiation may put you at risk of having photokeratitis, cataracts and other eye conditions. This is why the first thing you should consider when looking for your perfect sunglasses is their ability to provide excellent UV protection. Look for a label or sticker showing “100% UV Protection” or “UV400”. This means that the pair can block up to 400 nanometers of both UVA and UVB rays, giving you optimal eye protection.
Colored or Heavily Tinted Lenses Don’t Always Provide Adequate UV Protection
A common misconception about sunglasses is that the darker thetint, the better protection from UV radiation they provide. This is not true all the time. Sun- or eyeglasses that come in various lens colors are often designed as such to cut glare or enhance color contrast. That said, they may lack the necessary UV-blocking properties. Checking for the UV protection sticker is still a more reliable way to determine if the pair can safeguard your eyes from the effects of UV radiation. Better yet, have your eye care specialist examine the sunglasses for UV-filtering features.
The Bigger, the Better
Oversized sunglasses are a good choice. Not only are they fashion-forward, they can also provide better coverage for your eyes. They limit the amount of UV radiation that may enter your eyes, lowering your risk of developing UV-related eye conditions. Combining them with wraparound frames ensures UV rays won’t sneak through the side.
